What are breast surgeries?
Breast surgeries are plastic surgery procedures used to improve the appearance of the breasts. With breast surgeries, Richmond patients can enjoy larger and perkier breasts that no longer sag. We offer two procedures: breast augmentation and breast lift.
Is a breast augmentation or breast lift right for me?
Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that uses breast implants to enlarge and shape the breasts. Your enhanced look may bring you greater freedom with clothing and could give your self-confidence a boost as well.
A breast lift (mastopexy) can reshape, firm up, and lift sagging, shrinking, or atrophied breasts. It can also reduce the size of an enlarged stretched areola (the pigmented area around the nipple).
What happens during a breast augmentation?
The implants we use today are filled with a salt-water solution (saline) that is harmless to your body. These are called saline breast implants. After careful consultation with each patient in Richmond, a desired implant size, shape, profile, and texture are determined. This will help patients find the best breast implants for them. While some patients are best suited for small breast implants, others have a frame that works best with large breast implants.
The incision is small and is usually made underneath the breast just above the crease. Once the incision is made, Dr. McKeown creates a pocket, into which the implant is inserted. This pocket is made beneath the pectoral muscle. The incisions are then closed with special sutures, which are usually removed within a week.

What can I expect after breast augmentation surgery?
After the surgery in our Richmond office, patients will wear a dressing and a surgical bra. Post-operative discomfort is well controlled with the prescribed medications. Swelling and bruising usually subside within a few days during the recovery process, and most patients are back to work within one week. Every effort is made to minimize post-surgical marks, which will gradually fade with time.

Several techniques exist, but the general breast lift procedure consists of removing excess skin from the lower part of the breast. Then, the nipple, areola, and underlying breast tissue are elevated to a new, higher position. Incisions are closed with very precise special sutures.

A breast lift can reshape and lift sagging, shrinking, or atrophied breasts. A mastopexy lifts your breasts to a more natural position prior to childbearing, weight loss, or weight gain.
